Saudi skills verification and trade tests: what skilled workers should expect

If you are an electrician, plumber, welder, HVAC technician or other tradesperson planning to work in Saudi Arabia, you will very likely face two kinds of test: a government skills verification linked to your work visa, and an employer trade test run by the company or its recruitment agency. This guide explains the difference and how to prepare.

The Skill Verification Program (SVP)

Saudi Arabia introduced a Skill Verification Program for foreign skilled workers in a growing list of professions and countries of origin. Its aim is simple: make sure that a worker hired as an "electrician" actually has an electrician's skills before the work visa is issued. The test usually has a theory part and a practical part, is taken at an accredited test centre in your home country, and the result is linked to your visa application.

Which trades and nationalities are covered has been expanded in phases, so always confirm the current list with your recruitment agency and on the official SVP portal (search for "Skill Verification Program Saudi" and make sure you are on a government .sa website). Book only through the official portal or your licensed agency – never pay a stranger for a "guaranteed pass".

Employer trade tests

Separately, most contractors and manpower companies test candidates themselves. Agencies in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Sri Lanka often hold these tests on a set day – that is what many "walk-in interview" listings on GulfWalkin and similar sites are for. Typical tests:

How to prepare

  1. Bring originals and copies of your passport, trade certificates, experience letters and any previous Gulf visas.
  2. Carry your own basic PPE if the ad asks for it – safety shoes are commonly required for practical tests.
  3. Revise safety basics: lockout/tagout, permit-to-work, working at height and confined space. Interviewers for oil and gas roles nearly always ask.
  4. Practise explaining your past projects in simple English – plant name, what you built or maintained, and your role.
  5. Be honest about your level. Being placed as a skilled worker when you are a helper can lead to failing on site and losing the job.

After you pass

You will usually receive an offer letter, then go through a medical examination at an approved centre, visa stamping and emigration clearance in your home country. Check the offer against our Gulf job offer checklist before you sign.
